About the Role
We are a leading global chemical company seeking an experienced Category Manager specializing in Raw Materials (Chemicals) to join our procurement team in Basel, Switzerland. As the Category Manager, you will develop and execute strategic sourcing initiatives for raw chemical materials essential to our manufacturing processes. This role requires a deep understanding of the chemical market, strong supplier management skills, and the ability to drive cost efficiency while ensuring supply continuity and quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Category Strategy Development: Develop and implement sourcing strategies for raw chemical materials, including bulk chemicals, specialty chemicals, solvents, and other key raw materials, to support business objectives.
- Supplier Management & Negotiation: Identify, evaluate, and build relationships with global and regional suppliers. Lead negotiations to secure favorable terms, competitive pricing, and ensure supply chain reliability.
- Market Analysis & Risk Management: Conduct market research and risk assessments to stay ahead of industry trends, pricing shifts, supply chain disruptions, and regulatory impacts. Adapt strategies to mitigate risks and capture market opportunities.
- Cost Optimization & Efficiency: Analyze spend and procurement data to identify cost-saving opportunities. Drive initiatives that improve supplier performance and reduce costs while maintaining high-quality standards.
- Cross-functional Collaboration: Work closely with R&D, Manufacturing, Quality Assurance, and Supply Chain teams to align sourcing strategies with technical and operational requirements. Support product development and innovation initiatives through sourcing input.
- Sustainability Initiatives: Champion sustainable sourcing practices and collaborate with suppliers on environmental and social responsibility goals to support our company's sustainability objectives.
- Contract Management & Compliance: Manage contract negotiations and ensure compliance with company policies and relevant regulatory standards, such as REACH and other chemical-specific regulations.
- Performance Monitoring & Reporting: Develop and maintain KPIs for supplier performance, quality, and cost. Regularly report on category performance and suggest improvements to meet targets.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Supply Chain, Business, or a related field. A Master's degree or certifications (e.g., CIPS) are advantageous.
- Experience: Minimum 5 years of experience in procurement or category management within the chemicals industry, with a focus on raw materials sourcing.
- Market Knowledge: Strong understanding of the chemical market, including supply and demand dynamics, cost drivers, and regulatory landscape.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in procurement software (e.g., SAP Ariba) and data analysis tools. Advanced Excel skills required.
- Analytical & Negotiation Skills: Demonstrated analytical abilities with a successful track record in complex negotiations and supplier relationship management.
- Communication & Interpersonal Skills: Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with suppliers and cross-functional teams.
- Language Skills: Fluency in English is required; proficiency in German or French is an advantage.
